Project Description:
The project was conducted under the GEF5 Sustainable Land Management (GEF5-SLM) project titled: “Securing Multiple Ecosystem Benefits through Sustainable Land Management Practices”. It is a multi-institutional research project that intends to rehabilitate the degraded landscape of South Africa, improve productivity and ensure resilient livelihoods. Sustainable Land Management (SLM) represents a holistic approach to achieving long-term productive ecosystems by integrating biophysical, socio-cultural and economic needs and values. SLM increases food security especially to smallholder farmers by enhancing primary production, improve water availability and quality and further support livelihoods within a portion of the Project in the Olifants river landscape. Key focus was placed on the following activities:
Selective thinning and removal of encroacher plants species for sustainable ecosystem practices
Reduce erosion and sediment movement through effective working for ecosystem practices such as ponding, silt fences, gabion structures and other effective sediment traps
Social upliftment and skills development of project participants
To stabilize soil and reduce topsoil movement much needed for vegetation establishment inclusive of re-vegetation initiatives
Eradicate alien invasive plants through biological and chemical control.
